Comfortable yet functional clothing is key. Europeans are more formal dressers than Americans, and black is a favorite here. Keep in mind: bring clothes that you can mix, match, and wear with little fuss. Laundry is done twice a week. All clothes are washed on hot and dried on high, so expect your clothes to shrink. There is a small, coin-operated washer and dryer in the Montarina for clothing items that require special care.

Tops: Bring 3-4 long sleeve shirts that are good for layering, a few t-shirts that can double as athletic shirts or sleepwear, 3-4 that can be worn during evening social activities, and 2 warm weather shirts (tank tops). Bring 4-5 warm, dark sweaters that can be layered or dressed up.
Jeans: Bring 2-3.
Sweatshirt/sweatpants:The locals don't wear these, but it is nice to have a set
Winter accessories: Lugano is not particularly cold in the winter but you should take a hat, gloves, scarves, etc. for travel to colder countries.
Pants: Bring 2 pairs of non-jeans, ideally black
Warm weather bottoms: 2-3 skirts, capris or shorts. Believe it or not, you will eventually use these near the end.
Swimsuit

Shoes: When you are told you don't need as many shoes as you think, believe it. Bring NO MORE than: 1) Non-sneaker, comfortable shoes you can walk in (these will get the most use, so like them a lot and make sure they are in a color that goes with most of the things you are bringing) 2) Dress shoes or heels for girls. They will double for business settings and going out at night. 3) Athletic shoes, especially if you like to run 4) flip flops or summery shoes; the weather eventually gets warm enough. 5) Shower shoes.
Coats: The warmer, the better. Inside pockets and hoods are a bonus. Bring one waterproof, ski-jacket style coat and one that can be used around town or in a nicer setting.
